PARCHMENT (WKZO AM/FM) — It appears the City of Parchment may be handing off their troubled water system to the Kalamazoo City Utility in the wake of this summer’s PFAS crisis.
Mayor Robert Britigan III says it just makes sense considering the larger utility’s labs, staff, expertise and heavy equipment. It could actually mean lower rates for homeowners.
They say the quick response to the Parchment crisis was a pretty clear demonstration that the City Utility has its act together.
Britigan says it will free up their manpower to provide other city services.
They held a public hearing Monday evening and residents endorsed the idea.
The Parchment board voted unanimously to open negotiations with the City Utility.
If and when they reach an agreement, it will need to be approved by both the Kalamazoo and Parchment boards.
