KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo City Commission will get their first look at a proposed ordinance to create a local water advisory board at Monday night’s meeting.
It’s not because they feel a compelling need to form another committee, it’s a mandate coming from Lansing.
Following the Flint water crisis and the discovery of PFAS under Parchment, the MDEQ is now requiring that any water system with over 50,000 customers, have a 7-member citizens panel to advise the city on operations of the Utility and to develop educational materials.
City Staff says it’s part of the new Lead and Copper rule and they say it could jeopardize state funding the city receives to replace lead pipes. if they do not comply.
The Commission has until December 11th to have the panel in place.
That means Commissioners will take a final vote on the creation of the panel and will receive a list of appointees for their consideration at their December 3rd meeting.
