UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The recount on the Union Township ballot question to have the Township Board form a Planning Commission has been scheduled for Friday, December 7, 2018 starting at 8:30 a.m. in the Union Township Hall. The question was voted down by 25 votes, 268-243, in the November 6 election.
Branch County Clerk Terry Kubasiak says the request for the recount was made by a representative of the citizens group Concerned Citizens of Branch County at the clerks office one day after the Branch County Board of Canvassers finished their work certifying the election.
The ballot question was supported by the citizens group who are fighting DTE Energy’s plans to build wind turbines in northwest Branch County. Members say they are not against wind energy but they have strong feelings about the siting of the wind turbines. They have asked the County to intervene on their behalf and put together a county wide ordinance after the ballot issue failed. Right now, there are no zoning laws in Union Township.
There was a delay in counting the Union Township ballots on Election Night because there problems balancing the tabulator with the voter list. Results did not come in until the wee hours of the following morning.
