KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — He calls himself Dr. Matt Longjohn M.D. and has a little graphic like a heartbeat monitor in his campaign logo, but Republicans are saying the Democratic congressional candidate isn’t a real doctor…he is only playing one on TV.
MIRS News reports that while Longjohn did graduate with a medical degree from Tulane and did a residency at Northwestern, he has never been a licensed physician in either Illinois or Michigan.
State policy appears to be conflicted on the issue, depending on which policy you pick.
Longjohn says some M.D.’s work with patients, some with petri dishes and others, like him with programs and policy. But they are all doctors.
He calls the attempt to question that a smear campaign, and he has no plans to drop the MD from his title.
Longjohn was the National Health Officer for the 2,700 YMCAs in the United States.
On his website his education states:
- MD from Tulane University School of Medicine,
- MPH from School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.
- Internal medicine residency program at Northwestern University
Longjohn, who attended political event on healthcare near Bronson Park Wednesday, has yet to comment on the claims and allegations.
Longjohn is facing current 6th District Congressman Fred Upton in the November 6 general election.
