BATTLE CREEK (WKZO AM/FM) — Fire investigators in Battle Creek are saying a quick response to a chimney fire at 25-Ashley Street early Sunday morning kept it from spreading into the interior of the home.
It may be the first of the fall season which was only hours old as Sunday is the first full day of Fall, following the autumnal equinox on Saturday.
A fire in a wood furnace on the first cool night of fall resulted in a chimney fire that did damage the exterior of the home and an outside deck, but did not breach the interior.
The call came in at 4:35 am.
It caused only a little smoke and water damage inside. They estimate the damage at about $20,000 total.
It should probably serve as a reminder that before you stoke a fire in that fireplace or wood burning stove this fall, that the chimney be inspected first to make sure a build-up of creosote won’t spark a fire in your home.
