COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Coldwater man has been arraigned in Branch County District Court on charges that were filed against him and three other suspects by Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette for allegedly being part of a conspiracy to kidnap, rape and murder a young child and then dispose the body.
37-year-old David Bailey is being held in the Branch County Jail without bond. He is scheduled to appear in District Court for a probable cause hearing October 4, 2018. A preliminary exam was scheduled for October 11, 2018.
The State Attorney General’s Office announced last Friday that Bailey along with 32-year-old Matthew Toole of Battle Creek, 32-year-old Talia Furman of Springfield and 19-year-old Jayme LaPointe of Athens were all charged with Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Kidnapping and Conspiracy to Commit First Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct.
All of the crimes carry maximum sentences of life in prison if the defendants are found guilty. The defendants were arrested Friday following a Michigan State Police investigation.
Investigators say the group was plotting to kidnap a child from a county fair, parade, or supermarket parking lot.
