BATTLE CREEK (WKZO AM/FM) — The newest exhibit at the Binder Park Zoo is a baby red panda that may be as cute as a button but has a very sad back story.
Oolong was born on June 29th, but zoo staff had to intervene and take over raising the cub when his mother died of pneumonia in August.
The cub is smaller than most red pandas his age because of a thyroid condition.
They say he continues to improve with proper care and diet.
Red Pandas look more like raccoons than the big white and black bears from China that may be more familiar. They are also an endangered species.
Patrons can see Oolong at the Binder Park Zoo’s nursery during feeding times at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 4 p.m. through October 7th when the zoo closes for the season.
Ticket information and more can be found on the zoo’s website.
