SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A 12-year-old Boy from Portage is dead after being buried by a sand dune at the Boy Scout Camp in the Van Buren State Park near South Haven.
The 9-1-1 call came in at 4:14 p.m. Saturday and the first responders to arrive on scene found Boy Scout leaders had dug him out and were already performing CPR on Gage Wilson.
They were able to get a pulse after applying an Automated External Defibrilator to jumpstart his heart.
They had to carry the boy through the dunes, over trails and through water to get him to an ambulance and then a landing spot near Blue Star Highway where he was airlifted by AirCare to Bronson Methodist in Kalamazoo.
He later died in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Bronson.
Gage was participating in a scouting activity with the Boy Scouts of America.
An autopsy is planned but for now police are calling it a tragic accident.
