EMMETT TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – A firefighter from Athens suffered a gunshot wound to his leg on Monday after being dispatched to help with a massive grass fire burning along I-94 between Beadle Lake Road and G Drive North in Calhoun County’s Emmett Township.
Apparently his gun that he had a permit to carry, discharged accidentally in his pocket.
Even though February featured heavy rain and a snowstorm that dumped over a foot of snow, the ground has dried out and the grass fires are starting to pop up.
The Monday fire in Emmett Township burned almost 100 acres of dry grass. Six fire departments responded.
Traffic on I-94 was affected until the fire could be put out.
