KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — One of three former employees at a Kalamazoo youth home charged with the death of a teenager last year has entered a guilty plea to a lesser charge. Heather McLogan entered a no-contest plea in a virtual hearing Thursday on counts of third-degree child abuse.
She had earlier been charged with involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse. Those charges are expected to be dismissed at sentencing scheduled for late September.
16-year-old Cornelius Fredericks died in May of 2020 two days after staff members at Lakeside Academy aggressively restrained him for nearly eight minutes. McLogan was a nurse there when the incident occurred but was not involved in restraining Fredericks. Court appearances involving charges against the other two employees are not yet scheduled.
Altogether, ten employees at Lakeside Academy were fired related to the death of Fredericks.
