KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – More than 100 kids from the Kalamazoo area will participate in a unique “PLAY BALL” event this Wednesday, hosted by Major League Baseball and Derek Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation.
The event at Kalamazoo Central High School will feature the school’s baseball and softball student-athletes assisting PLAY BALL ambassador Justin Sherman in coaching the 5-12 year olds. This will be the second PLAY BALL event in 2026, following an event held at the Boys & Girls Club of Miami-Dade in March.
Organizers say the introductory-level baseball and softball activities are meant to encourage greater accessibility to the sport, while demonstrating the variety of ways in which the game can be played in almost any setting. The PLAY BALL initiative is baseball’s global effort to encourage young people and communities to engage in baseball- or softball-related activities, including formal leagues, special events, and casual forms of play.
Since its launch in December 1996, Derek Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation has created and supported programs and activities designed to motivate young people to turn away from drugs and alcohol and “Turn 2” healthy lifestyles. Through various specialized programs and events, the Foundation works with youth in New York City, west Michigan, and Florida.
