DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The United States and Canada have officially brokered a deal to open the Gordie Howe International Bridge, establishing a new multibillion-dollar link between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.
Originally scheduled to open last month, completion of the one-point-five-mile infrastructure project was delayed due to an intense international disagreement over revenue distribution. Following successful negotiations, the span is now locked in for an official grand opening on July 27, marking the arrival of the fourth major border crossing operating between Detroit and Canada.
The breakthrough comes on the heels of a standoff initiated by President Trump, who previously threatened to completely block the bridge’s opening unless the United States was granted a formal ownership stake.
Over the weekend, the President took to Truth Social to announce the resolution, asserting that he was ultimately “able to cut a much better deal for America.” With the ownership and revenue dispute put to rest, final preparations are underway to integrate the massive international transit point into the region’s busy trade network.
