KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Education has given Superintendent Dr. Darrin Slade another vote of confidence, extending his current contract for an additional year.
After last night’s vote, Slade’s contract won’t end until 2031, following his most recent evaluation which gave him excellent grades.
Trustees say he has turned the district around, with Carol McGlinn, Patti Sholler-Barber and Takisha Johnson all praising his work ethic. Trustee Yvonne Payton says they have accomplished major things under his leadership.
Slade says it’s a team effort, and says right now they are focused on getting students enrolled for fall. Enrollment has become a priority for schools all over the nation as the birth rate has declined and schools at every grade level, from kindergarten to college grad schools to fill seats.
The district will have a booth at Saturday’s Northside Day event at LaCrone Park to sign up incoming students, particularly five-year olds starting kindergarten.
Portage Schools held an enrollment event yesterday at Portage Central High.
