KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County commission is looking for volunteers to serve on a temporary ad hoc task force to recommend how dollars from their new childcare millage should be spent.
They are looking for people who have expertise in the daycare community, but also regular parents who have struggled to obtain daycare, representatives from the business community, and commissioner Tami Rey proposed adding representatives from philanthropic groups.
“I do think it’s important that we have somebody on here that can talk about how we can leverage the funding and not just providers and parents and caregivers because they may have ideas, but they don’t have the money to leverage the funding,” says Rey.
They are seeking to fill eight community positions for the 11 member panel, which will include three county commissioners.
They want a wide range of opinions, experience, and ideas as they put their five-year plan together.
Once they have established priorities for the funding, determine gaps that need to be filled and ways it can be best spent, the task force will hand off the job of maintaining the effort to an oversight panel of county staff and local residents and experts next year.
Applications will be accepted through Friday, October 30, 2026.
