KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools has had a reputation in the past as a rough district, but they have done a lot to improve discipline since superintendent Darrin Slade came on board.
Last night, Student Services director Dr. Lisa Dewey updated the board of trustees on this year’s numbers so far, and serious improvements are being made in reducing fights, classroom disruptions and other incidents.
She says they have also seen significant reductions in the number of suspensions.
She credits the hiring of additional staff specifically assigned to make sure students have the social supports they need to avoid bad behavior.
Dr. Slade says they would rather avoid suspensions, but its still an option for more serious infractions.
Dewey says these aren’t the final numbers for the school year, which is still in progress.
They will make additional reports when those numbers are available.
