BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Battle Creek Police Department says they plan to submit criminal charges to the Calhoun County Prosecutor’s Office following an incident where a firearm discharged inside a third-grade student’s backpack.
The shooting occurred Tuesday morning in a hallway at Ann J. Kellogg Elementary School, immediately prompting school officials to enact lockdown protocols. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and law enforcement personnel quickly recovered the weapon and removed the student from the premises.
Following the incident, authorities executed a search warrant at the home where the child had been staying to look for additional weapons and evidence.
The department noted that this case underscores a worrying spike in youth weapon access, revealing that local officers have arrested 15 juveniles for firearm possession since February.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation serves as a critical reminder of the importance of secure firearm storage under Michigan law.
