KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Legislation inspired by the bike tragedy in Kalamazoo may be approved too late to be part of the anniversary commemoration, but not by much.
Sponsor Margaret O’Brien says she is confident that it will be up for a vote this week in Lansing…before they break for the summer.
The bills will require that motorists give cyclists at least three feet of leeway when passing bikers riding in the same direction.
O’Brien says she is disappointed that the State House reduced the spacing called for in her Senate bill from 5 to 3 feet, but says its better than no required spacing, which is the current standard in the state.
A second bill dedicates an hour of classwork during driver education courses to how to drive around pedestrians, bicyclists, the disabled and other roadway users.
